Suggestions on what to do in Vancouver?

The family and I headed to Vancouver for vacation in a bit over a week. Well, it's a "vacation" for the kids, at least; Husband will be attending a medical conference while I wrangle the children around town. So I ask you blog-readers: any tips on what to do and see with a two-year old and five-almost-six year old in Vancouver? (We'll be staying downtown, and I will not be driving).

The ZOO, Stanley Park, Granville Island (awesome lots of things to look at for the children too) and maybe a walk on Kitselano Beach...or Jericho (lots of dead wood and stuff to play with). (can you tell I am missing the sea?)

And then of course, the campus of UBC with the anthropology museum (HUGE totem poles and lots of native indian heritage) and the botanical garden. There is (was?) two buses from down town all the way out there... was it 4th and 7th... I'm sure Cath knows though....

Might want to look out for the shady neighborhood south of down town, but I'm sure you can go to Chinatown without passing through there. And then there is the gas clock which can be fun to see?

The zoo's not in Stanley Park any more, but the aquarium is AWESOME and I've never known a kid not to love it! The rest of the park is also great, and I think the Halloween train ride thingy might be up and running already.

I second Chall's suggestion of Granville Island (there's a kid's market as well as the main public market), especially if you get there by aquabus (water taxi) from downtown! The beaches are indeed awesome too, plus there's ScienceWorld with lots of hands-on exhibits for kids to play with.

But most importantly you should try to find some time to meet up with me! :)

Word verification thingy is burponup, which seems relevant somehow.

zoo - aquarium... well, I might have misplaced the words (or they actually had a oo in stanley part way back - when I lived there - and now it's gone?!!? I just remember some kind of killer whales anyway... and a polar bear who was sadsadsad).

Aquariums are so much fun!

Good luck with finding it all BeanMom, and say hi to CAth from me :)

I was there pre-kids, but I remember really liking the market on Granville Island. And Stanley Park is very pretty- if you're up for a bike ride, it is an easy and scenic ride.

Thanks so much for the suggestions, everyone! Stanley Park and the aquarium especially sound great--my kids love aquariums! And boat rides, too.

Oh, and yes, EGM, I hope to see Cath =)

Yeah, they moved the zoo out to one of the Eastern suburbs. Langley or somewhere like that. Apparently it's a very sad and depressing zoo. The aquarium doesn't have orcas any more, but they have dolphins, belugas, sea lions, and (my favourites) sea otters, which are just about the cutest things EVAH. http://www.vanaqua.org/home/otters.html

What an interesting blog, introduced by a thought-provoking photo. The unusual wall painting of the dwellings is also a strangely modern interpretation. Something like this hieroglyphic view of a park by Swiss painter Paul Klee, http://EN.WahooArt.com/A55A04/w.nsf/OPRA/BRUE-8LT475.
The image can be seen at wahooart.com who can supply you with a canvas print of it.
